“There are many reasons why Lisbon is an appropriate setting for the conference. The Conference title stresses Crossroads and Intersections: this has always been Lisbon's role in European and International culture, but it also reflects the diversity of the nature of the Ancient Novels - both Greek and Latin, dealing with both the Greek and Latin homeland and with the periphery of the Ancient World - Ethiopia, Babylon, Egypt and the Far North.
Much recent work on the Ancient Novel has included reception in the Renaissance and Early Modern Periods ... This is a period of great Portuguese influence on greater European and world History, and I expect that the Lisbon conference will add substantially to our awareness of this period."
